- The Future of Strive -

Intro
A recent interview ArcSys did with Dexerto of all places has confirmed that Season 5 does indeed exist. I already suspected this heavily, but now it is confirmed. I wanted to try to analyse which characters will end up in the new season. I will treat this as if there will be two seasons left as I really expect to at least make it to Season 6.

As for their "big surprise", I have no clue. It's probably just Season 5, but who knows. I have a couple of ideas, from most to least likely...

  - Literally just Season 5
  - More New Moves (For characters past the base roster)
  - Instant Kills
  - Very Extra Large Balance Patch
  - Complete UI Refresh
  - New Mode (M.O.M Mode, Beat Em' Up, etc.)
  - Skins
  - Live Service Stuff (Battlepass or something similar).
  - Another Guest Character

But all of these feel fairly easy to guess, and they specifically said that we would not expect it. Regardless, this page is about the characters...
Note about ""The Leaks""
When the big source code leak happened, a supposed "Season 5 Leak" was going around that listed a bunch of characters that were supposedly coming in Season 5: Jam Kuradoberi, Kum Haehyun, Answer, and Raven. This was completely false. While there was a basis for the characters being mentioned, they are not confirmed by any means. Jam has been in the files since the beta versions, and the other three are actually very strange test versions of Strive characters. Haehyun is an early version of A.B.A, Answer is an early version of Slayer, and Raven is an early version of Dizzy. They have nothing to do with the actual characters, just utilize their animations. I would put very little stock into these meaning anything. For more information about these, see here (Spoiler warning! That page contains other stuff from the leak!).

Unplayable (Notable)
Unplayable (Not Notable)
The characters that are in "Unplayable (Not Notable)" are generally characters that I would not consider for this, but they have been present in character polls so it is clear ArcSys considers them. The only one that is getting past this section is Tyr, as well as 2cave since Daisuke apparently wants him back.

The Raid of Arms characters as well as the Zako-Dan are not making it past this section. I really doubt we will ever see them again as they are not real characters but just basic enemies made playable.

I'm leaving out Dr. Baldhead and Eddie. I have no idea why they are still appear in the polls are they very obviously will never be playable again.

Same goes for Bedman/Romeo, unfortunately. I would love to see him back but they very clearly wouldn't do that when Bedman? is already playable. That is a next game thing.

- Logistical Evidence -
This is all evidence surrounding the logic of adding certain characters, based on their popularity, uniqueness, lore relevence, etc.
Popularity
Popularity based entirely on my view of the community's opinion as a whole.

Polls
Since the game's release (and even before), ArcSys has help popularity polls for what characters people want. They will be given a points system in which 1st = 10 points, 2nd = 9 points, etc.
Season 1 Poll
Taken from https://www.arcsystemworks.jp/guiltygear/db/en/volume1.php.
20

Unranked
Basically every character that was voted for ended up being added, some even in the base game. The most popular of those characters was Baiken in every region other than Japan, who chose Bridget (don't visit the page if you don't like seeing very dated references to Bridget's gender).
Season 2 Poll

Not an Option
The most modern one, and best since it doesn't include any characters currently playable. The most notable thing is honestly who is now Unranked, such as Judgment, Chronus, and especially Tyr. Gabriel is also shockingly high up now.
Marketability
How much hype the character would generate, and how difficult it would be for ArcSys to sell them. Similar to popularity, but includes some other factors.
Widespread Celebration
Above Average
If their gameplay is interesting, otherwise below average as they don't have hype from previous playerbase.
Carried by Memes
Average
Wildcard
"I'm not buying Sol, I can already play as him."
Uphill Battle
"Is that Q from Street Fighter????"
United States President
Most of these are fairly self explanatory. Wildcard basically means that there is no way to know what the reception would be.

Robo-Ky II only makes it into Average due to people not knowing he exists and assuming he is just Robo-Ky.

Order-Sol is hard to decide on. It feels like although a lot of people know about him and want him back, but that may only be due to the online fanbase. The majority of more casual players likely doesn't know anything about Order-Sol, and would have no reason to buy him as they assume he is just a skin for Sol or something.

Vernon is probably the worst thing they could do to the game, as the controversy around adding the president of the United States would dwarf even the Bridget controversies.
Gameplay
How unique is the character's gameplay? This seperates them into VERY baseline ideas like "Rushdown" or "Zoner". Obviously Guilty Gear characters are always very unique, but this is more about character's role in the game overall. Characters who have never been playable are more about what their abilities are, and what they might play like.
Super Unique
Unique
Normal Level
Likely Uses A Sword (Needs More)
Major rework, takes a lot from old Faust (but not everything)
Complete Unknown
Robo-Ky II relies entirely on the return of the custom moves concept, which is very unlikely to return. Still, it is incredibly unique.

Gabriel would likely be some kind of mobile grappler. Think a combination of Slayer and Potemkin.

Dr. Paradigm would likely take ideas from Xrd Jack-O', who herself took from Overture. His reputation as a master of strategy would make him a minion-based zoner of some kind.

Tyr is basically all just potential based on his abilities.
Lore
How likely a character is to return based on their lore, or how easily they could fit into a new story.
Lore Relevent
(A story to continue)
Lore Relevent
(Content with life)
Lore Irrelevent (Content with life)
Lore Irrelevent (Needs new story content)
Currently Busy (Stage element, etc.)
Dead
(Has been cloned)
Time Travel Shenanigans
Dead
Has No Lore
Lore Relevant (A story to continue) is characters who have an active, ongoing story that needs to be continued or concluded.

Lore Relevant (Content with life) is characters that do have story importance, but have largely finished their main arcs and do not have a currently active storyline. They would either need to get new story content or would be treated like Testament / Venom where we just see their day to day life.

Lore Irrelevent (Content with life) is only for Jam. She is pretty irrelevent in the grand scheme of things, but they can easily show us her day to day life and it would work.

Lore Irrelevent (Needs new story content) is characters that either were never relevant or have fallen out of relevance to the story. They need an active reason to come back.

Currently Busy (Stage element, etc.) is characters are actively already in Strive in some way. Malcolm Myers and Dr. Paradigm appear on New Dawn, A Future Unfolding, and Robo-Ky is a participant in Venom's moveset. However, it wouldn't be that hard to still include them. They would simply have to disappear from their place when played as.

The rest of the characters are all dead or otherwise difficult to bring back.
Individual Analysis
An analysis of each character's individual likelihood of returning.
2cave
2cave should have literally everything going against him. He isn't popular, has no story relevance, and doesn't have a unique weapon to base gameplay around. But he is also Daisuke's personal choice to bring back. That is a genuinely incredible feat considering all of the other (actually interesting) characters in the series, and it could honestly carry him to playability. Unless it was a joke, of course. Only time will tell.
Answer
Answer has a lot of cards stacked in his favor. Unique gameplay, decent popularity, and relevance to a somewhat unexplored lore avenue that is the Eastern Chipp Kingdom. That decent popularity is in a perfect middle ground of being popular enough to get votes but not nearly as much as Jam or Robo-Ky, letting him easily fit into any future season regardless of the other characters. Very very high chances.
Ariels
Ariels feels like she missed her chance. Back in Xrd she was important and could have easily fit as a newcomer, but now she just doesn't feel relevant. From what we know she is still imprisoned, and I really doubt she has the drive to fight anymore now that Chaos is gone. That combined with her middling popularity and lack of a central gimmick makes Ariels pretty unlikely, unfortunately.
Chronus
Chronus is a really unfortunate case. Lore-wise he is one of the absolute best candidates, having an open ended story with plenty of ways to continue. He is also just generally important and therefore any future story could fit him in easily. However it all falls apart in any other section. Chronus has no defined moveset, and his popularity is low. Worst of all he is a marketing nightmare, as he has a near identical design to Street Fighter's Q which will just confuse people. All this combined means he probably won't come back outside of a new story mode. A sad fate.
Crow
Crow is self explanatory. No popularity, little lore relevance, and we have never seen him fight (Though he likely fights like Johnny, since they had the same teacher.)

What saves him is actually the addition of other characters. If Justice were to be added, she would almost certainly be a clone like she was in XX. Since Crow was responsible for said clone, he could very easily be a background character like Delilah is for Bedman?. He could also take on that role for Robo Ky II, replacing the generic "scientist" from Isuka.
Dr. Paradigm
Paradigm had a lot going for him, but then was turned into a stage element. Very sad. His lore relavance is very high, especially considering his recent role in Duel Rulers. His moveset potential is also very high due to his connection to Overture. But he just doesn't have the popularity to get in. The stage element thing really seals his fate, unfortunately. They could just remove him from the stage when he plays on it, but I doubt they would have added him in the first place if that was the case.
Fanny
Fanny is currently very unpopular, not particularly story relevant, and has a moveset partially being original and partially taking from Dr. Baldhead. However, I think she could very easily be added to Strive. With Faust in the state he is in, Fanny could fit into his story pretty well. That could boost her relevance and popularity, and the changes to Faust's moveset since then will make her moveset stands out a bit more. In essence, Fanny has high potential but she needs a big push. And I think that could easily happen. Her super low popularity feels more like a symptom of being in a super obscure game most people don't know about rather than actual dislike. I think she has a decent chance.
Gabriel
The perfect character. He has been around since Missing Link, has good popularity (and even more by riding off of Potemkin's popularity), has high relevance to lore, and has incredible moveset potential as a cross between Slayer and Potemkin. Seeing as Guilty Gear essentially only has one true grappler, a new one would be a big deal and would bring a lot of variety. Gabriel is basically a guarantee in my eyes.
Izuna
Izuna has been completely absent since Vastedge, and could very easily get new story elements. He isn't all that popular however. He does have somewhat decent moveset potential at least. Izuna is probably one of the easiest "forgotten" characters to bring back.
Jam Kuradoberi
Nothing to say, really. Super popular, has been around since X, and has been asked for since the start of the game. It's more surprising that she isn't in already.
Judgment
Judgment is technically dead, but with how weird his game is they could pretty easily just say he survived somehow. Even if that did happen though, he has very little going for him. No popularity, basically zero lore relevance, and a moveset with nothing particularly special about it (his main "gimmick" is that he is the only character capable of blocking). They could bring him back but I really doubt it. It would be a cool choice, just not one I would expect on any level.
Justice
Despite being dead, Justice is very easy to bring back in the form of a clone, like in AC+R. The problem is that Justice is TOO story relevant. Her coming back is a very major event and would likely require a new story mode just so they could kill the clone. Besides that though, she is popular and serves as a very different zoner compared to other ones (even if Dizzy has stolen Michael Sword). In theory the fact that Dizzy stole one of her moves would ruin her chance, but Nagoriyuki stole Bloodsucking Universe and Slayer still joined. Anything could happen. See Crow for more details about how Justice as a clone could work.
Kliff Undersn
Kliff is very dead. Very very very dead. He has been dead since Missing Link and since then has only shown up in non-canon scenarios or during time travel. From a non-lore perspective he has a lot going for him due to his popularity and unique status as a low-mobility glass cannon, but the lore simply outweighs that. With Duel Rulers' focus on time travel they could theoretically work something out, but I really doubt it. It would feel weird to have Kliff not be dead.
Kum Haehyun
Haehyun just makes sense. She is the most important character left that originated in Xrd, has a fairly unique moveset, and has an acceptable popularity level. She would be very easy to include and I truly doubt we would go more than a single season without her.
Leopaldon
Leopaldon has a cult following for their incredibly weird concept and design. Their popularity has mostly grown from people making jokes about their existence, though there are a few people that truly want them in. They unfortunately have little story relevance and their gameplay is undercooked so they lack a bit in most areas. However, Daisuke was specifically asked about Leopaldon in an interview so ArcSys is at least aware of the popularity. Perhaps there is a chance? I wouldn't count on it.
Malcolm Myers
A strange case. He is currently doing forced labor on the stage New Dawn, A Future Unfolding, but could very easily just not appear when played as. Like with Paradigm though, it just seems odd to put him there at all if they were planning his addition. He has pretty decent moveset potential, but lacks any popularity. He was however the subject of an ArcSys April Fool's reveal and therefore has full key art. Because of this, he probably won't be added. As much as I would love for the joke to extend to the fact that he really was becoming playable, I just doubt it unfortunately. See my extended thoughts here.
Order-Sol
Order-Sol is very popular and has been voted for in basically every poll. His gameplay is unique and really good, and as for lore relevance he is just past Sol Badguy. The problem is that he is really hard to bring back. He is literally stuck in the past and while they did make excuses before, I am unsure if they will again. At the very least Duel Rulers had some time travel elements, so it isn't impossible. ArcSys understands the popularity, at least. Another problem though is Order-Sol's marketability. To the unaware person he looks like a skin for Sol, and therefore he probably wouldn't sell well. Or maybe he would due to his high popularity. If anything, I think the most likely option is a new character that steals his moveset (which would have worked for Unika, but she got her own thing).
Raven
Raven has everything going for him. Unique gameplan, high popularity, and most of all a ton of story potential. We have no idea what happened to him after leaving Asuka, and have only seen him ominously standing on a tower. Very high chance chance to get in all around.
Robo-Ky
Despite being super popular, getting a ton of votes, and having a very unique moveset, I actually have a bit of doubt for Robo-Ky's inclusion. He is actively a part of Venom's moveset. Now theoretically, he could be removed from it. Venom already has a version of his throw that doesn't include Robo-Ky, and Dark Angel can just have a rocket fly in from offscreen (and if we are lucky, it would be one from Venom Rocket No.13). But the question, once again, is why? Neither of Robo-Ky's inclusions are necessary, so ArcSys had no reason to include him unless they knew they wouldn't be adding Robo-Ky. His inclusion with Venom makes a lot of sense and brought some cool interactions anyway, so I doubt they really would want to bring him back.

Robo-Ky does have the other factor of being Daisuke's most wanted choice to bring back to Xrd, but again I feel like that chance has passed.
Robo-Ky II
No chance. His entire gimmick is being able to take moves from other characters, which is a balancing nightmare and a ton of extra work. In addition he isn't popular and doesn't have any story. We are not getting Robo-Ky II.
Tyr
Tyr is defined by potential. His existance is confined to Guilty Gear Xtra, which no one knows about. Therefore he has no popularity and little relevance, but could very easily get it back. ArcSys just has to treat him as a new character essentially, and they could easily win big like they did with Unika.

Normally I would say that Tyr is simply too obscure, and would assume that ArcSys themselves forgot about him. But out of nowhere Tyr was included in the Season 4 Character Poll, his first mention in over two decades as he hasn't even been in GG World. Someone at ArcSys knows Tyr exists, and that fact alone keeps his chances alive. Why else would they acknowledge him?
Valentine
Valentine is the most dead character there is. We actively watched her die in Overture. She never got any time travel stuff to be seen again. Jack-O' stole multiple of her moves in Xrd. Ramlethal stole Lucifero, her main weapon. She has a bit of popularity but I can't see any future where Valentine gets back in. There just isn't reason for it.
Vernon
"75th PRESIDENT VARNON make playable character!"

Vernon will never be playable. Whatever popularity he may have doesn't matter. His lack of a potential moveset doesn't matter. The simple fact that he is the United States President means he can not be added. The political climate is terrible and if ArcSys tried to do this they would encounter a controversy like no other. Vernon is a story mode character and nothing more.
Zappa
Zappa feels like a very obvious choice, and has a good bit going for him. He's popular, somewhat lore important, and has a super unique moveset. The only problem is the fact that he is no longer controlled by the spirits, but he could pretty easily be reworked to be controlling the spirits himself. Definitely the most likely of the XX characters.
Final Analysis
Considering all the previously said reasons, how likely is each character.
Near Guarantee
High Chances
Normal Amount
Wildcard Choice
Won't happen, but...
Unlikely
Extra Unlikely
Under No Circumstance
Any character in the top two tiers are what I would consider to be the obvious choices for the next seasons, and most if not all of them will likely show up. But of course, we can't expect ArcSys to do what is expected. Bedman was super dead and assumed to be gone forever, and then we got Bedman? in Season 2. Anything could happen. Now, as for the final predictions:

Both seasons follow the rule that at least one new character and at least one character below high chances has to make it in (these can be the same character)

Season 5
Season 6
To no one's surprise, Season 5 starts off with Jam, before moving on to Zappa as the "complex" character of the season. Gabriel stands the the season's brand new character (placed closer to the end since Season 4 ended with Unika and Lucy, two new characters), and Answer is just a fairly basic choice for a returning character from Xrd.

Season 6 cleans up the rest of Xrd with Haehyun and Raven. Izuna has been missing since Vastedge, so his inclusion finally informs us on what he has been up to since then. This season also brings Tyr, a complete surprise choice to add a truly obscure character to the game.

If I were to choose one more character as the runner-up, it would be Daryl. He just feels like the most likely unplayable character from the Xrd-Strive era, and I swapped between him and Izuna multiple times. In the end though, I chose Izuna to further the tradition of remaking one Overture character per game (Sin in Xrd Sign, Raven in Xrd Revelator).

Both of these leave out Robo-Ky and Order-Sol, consistently some of the most requested characters. Robo-Ky feels too weird to bring back following his inclusion with Venom, but in the next game he is probably a near guarantee pick. Order-Sol just has too many issues standing before him, like his marketability and difficulty lore-wise.
Physical Evidence
But wait! That's not all! In the leak recently, I found four early-development stages that could potentially be meant for Seasons 5 and 6. None of them are complete, but they have all at the very least been worked on this year. While stages do not necessarily equate to characters, every stage released besides Fairy's Forest Factory has been associated with a character coming that season. They don't necessarily have to release directly with said character (White House Reborn releasing with Testament when it is clearly meant for Goldlewis or Chaos) but they are very likely to mean something. For more about them, see here.
Spoiler Warning
Before we go any further:
- SPOILER WARNING -

This section discusses stuff from the leak. It doesn't necessarily guarantee anything about the contents of the season, as these stages may be scrapped eventually and may even release without a coinciding character. Still, keep in mind that this could very easily spoil future content.

A strange case. Despite having nearly the same name and sharing a bunch of assets under the name "Irontown", these stages are completely different in layout. Perhaps they are simply testing both to see which one they like more? Regardless, the simple theme of "town" can lead to multiple things. Of the remaining, the following would fit into this theme:
Associated with a town or country
Has previously had a home stage as a town
Has previously been in a desert-ish town or desert
Has previously been in a town
Not town related
Importantly, it is technically possible that the desert theme is a simple placeholder. Regardless, it will be somewhat considered.

Answer is obviously very important to the Eastern Chipp Kingdom, and it isn't unreasonable to think this may be that. We have never seen it in any game so far, so this would be a great opportunity.

Tyr is a bit more questionable. He is from a town, though that town is specifically a Japanese colony. This wouldn't really work for that theme, and we already have Lap of the Kami for that purpose. Still, the stage could radically change.

Zappa's home stage in XX was Phantom City, and while it isn't particularly important to his story it still existed.

Valentine and Izuna were first met in Triora in Overture, which fits this area somewhat well. Neither are really associated with it, but still.

Chronus and Malcolm Myers have both been in a desert before. Neither of which have specifically been in a desert town, but the point still stands.

Ultimately, I think I will give this spot to Izuna with this being Triora. Obviously Underworld Hill would fit him better, but we already have stages like Lap of the Kami and Banri to fill that role. Triora works as a very general Overture stage.

The earliest of these stages progress-wise. Most of the geometry is just untextured chunks from other stages, and even the water itself could be a placeholder. Regardless, I will treat this as if it will seem somewhat similar to this one. If it was older I would just assume it was an older version of Forgotten Prayer, Engulfed Lives, but this has been edited since then.

As for characters that could work with this...
Water Related
Has previously had a water-based home stage
Has been near water or on an island
Dehydrated
Significantly more restricted in terms of characters. Dr. Paradigm is by far the best here, as the place very tangentially resembles Ganymede. I wouldn't count on it.

Leopaldon's home stage was Antarctica. It doesn't look anything like this place, but it was a similar color I guess?

Judgment's story primarily takes place on an island, Isene, but it looks nothing like this. Raven stood on a beach in After Story A, but I still really doubt it would matter.

If anything, this stage is almost certainly a new one like Fairy's Forest Factory. None of the potential options are likely additions besides Raven, and his attachment is razor-thin as it is. I doubt any character will fit this.

Very obviously points to Gabriel. Though it looks way better than the other stages, it hasn't been edited in a while and seems to just be made up of older assets. Still, very obvious what it suggests.
Final Analysis
Considering this new imformation:
Season 5
Season 6
Season 5 again starts off with Jam, with Banri releasing later. Zappa and Answer are unchanged besides order. Gabriel has swapped places with Izuna so that they release with their respective stages.

Season 6 has been shuffled around, with Gabriel now being the final character alongside his stage. Test_Soma releases with Raven for no particular reason, and Tyr is now the second character to make sure a legacy character returns between the new ones.
